Montgomery celebrates 100th birthday

J. Esther Montgomery will celebrate her 100th birthday on March 15. She retired from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, from the School of Home Economics. She is the daughter of the late James Calvin Montgomery and the late Johnnie Beulah McInturff Montgomery and was born in Loudon County near Morganton.

Ms. Montgomery graduated from Maryville College and the University of Tennessee. Her career work included working at ALCOA Inc. during World War II, teaching at Howard School of Maryville, Townsend High School, Brevard College in North Carolina and Tennessee Technological University. She began her professorship at Tennessee Tech in 1951 and retired in 1975. Her specialty was housing and home management in the School of Home Economics.

Much of Ms. Montgomery’s life since retirement has been filled with genealogy research and writing family history books of John and Esther Houston Montgomery, the Bussells of Busselltown, the McInturff families, Oakland United Methodist Church, Trigonia Community and several smaller endeavors.

Reminiscing with family and friends is a favorite pastime when they visit at Shannondale of Maryville. She also enjoys cards and birthday wishes. Cards may be sent to Esther Montgomery, 804 Shannondale Way, Maryville, TN 37803.
