The man jumped off an area called "the bluff," which is a nearly 50-feet-high rock formation off Jackson Bend Road, into a portion of Tellico Lake that is 90 feet deep at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, said Greenback Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ronnie Lett.
The Greenback Fire Department got the call at 9:45 p.m. Saturday and the body was recovered at the same spot where he jumped in at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, Lett said.
The area is dangerous, he said. “I wouldn’t jump off there if my life depended on it.”
Another person drowned at the bluff a couple of years ago and the fire department often responds to injury calls at the location, Lett said.
Ninety percent of the injuries involve people who hurt their backs when they hit the water, he said. “It’s a long hike to the road from the lake. We have to carry them out.”
When Greenback got the call, they sent 15 men, some by boat and others by foot, to see if the man had made it to the bank and couldn’t get back to the top, Lett said. Loudon County Rescue Squad also sent a men and a boat to search for the body.
