A woman and five small children escaped a basement fire at 4:09 p.m. today at 1605 Flora Drive, which is off Wrights Ferry Road in Blount County.
The cause of the fire was apparently electric in nature, caused by a clothes dryer.
“The woman said she had just turned on the dryer and it didn’t work,” said Blount County Fire Chief Doug McClanahan. “A short time later she smelled smoke and opened the basement door to find more smoke.”
The family, which has not yet been identified, is renting the two-story frame dwelling. They moved in about a month ago, he said.
Blount County Fire Department had the fire under control within 12 minutes of arrival, McClanahan said.
