Blount County Sheriff’s deputy taken to hospital after fight with Friendsville suspect

A Blount County Sheriff’s deputy is being treated at the hospital after he was injured in a fight while attempting to arrest a Friendsville man this afternoon.
Deputy Eddie Nickerson is currently being treated and Blount Memorial Hospital, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.
Two people — Joshua Dewayne Hackler, 26, and Chessica Danielle Gayheart, 27, both of Hollyhock Way, Friendsville — are in custody at the Blount County Detention Facility and are facing charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Nickerson responded to the residence of the two subjects at around 2:30 p.m. to serve a warrant on Hackler when the suspect began to fight with the deputy, authorities said. During the fight, Nickerson received a broken ankle, a gash to his head and was sprayed in the face with chemical spray.
Another deputy, Nathan Payne, received a needle prick while frisking Hackler and is currently being examined in the emergency room at Blount Memorial Hospital, the release states.
Hackler and Gayheart were both charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Hackler was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond and court dates on the two suspects have not yet been set.
