Brewer dismisses sales tax referendum lawsuit

Blount County General Sessions Court Judge William R. Brewer
has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to force Administrator of Elections Libby Breeding to allow Alcoa
residents to vote in a county sales tax referendum on Nov. 6.
During a short hearing this morning, Brewer ruled that Maryville resident Samuel Duck, who filed the lawsuit, did not have standing in the matter.
The county’s position is that state law does not allow that because the issue has already been voted on in Alcoa where voters, on Aug. 2, approved a referendum to increase the local sales tax from 2.25 percent to 2.75 percent in order to fund a new Alcoa High School.
