Fire victim dies as a result of injuries

From Staff Reports

The Maryville woman who was injured in Tuesday’s fire at her Sevier Avenue residence died from her injuries Wednesday afternoon, according to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

Shirley Ann Shields, 70, died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where she was taken via Rural/Metro after being transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. She was being treated at Vanderbilt’s Burn Unit.

The cause and origin of the fire that occurred Tuesday morning on Sevier Avenue is still under investigation, and investigators are awaiting results from samples sent to the TBI lab in Nashville. Foul play is not suspected.

At around 8:30 Tuesday morning, the BCSO, along with the Blount County Fire Department and Rural/Metro Ambulance Service, responded to Shields’ residence after a passerby saw smoke and flames coming from the house. Firefighters with the Blount County Fire Department found Shields lying on the floor in a hallway and were able to rescue her.

More details will follow.
