Five children injured after school buses collide in Alcoa Highway accident
From Staff Reports
KNOXVILLE —A three-vehicle accident involving two Blount County School buses this morning has sent five Carpenters Elementary School students to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital with minor injuries.
The accident occurred at 9:18 a.m. today in the north bound lanes of Alcoa Highway on the Buck Karnes Bridge.
According to the preliminary investigation, two Blount County School buses were traveling in the outside lane when the first bus slowed for traffic. The second bus was reportedly unable to slow down in time and side-swiped the first bus.
After impact, the second bus swerved into the center lane in front of a north bound Toyota Corolla driven by Clara Beasley, 20, Knoxville. She reportedly could not avoid hitting the rear of the bus.
Beasley was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment and observation. Five children were transported to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital for observation. Neither bus driver was injured.
The buses are owned by Huffman Bus Co., which dispatched two buses to the crash scene to transport the remaining children back to school.
The first bus had about 58 occupants, including the students, teachers, chaperones, and the driver. The second had about 42 occupants, including students, teachers, chaperones, and the driver.
