MC women earn at-large NCAA bid

The Maryville College women’s basketball team had to wait for 34 other teams to be announced but when the 18th first-round pairing of the 2013 NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament appeared on the projection screen the Orange Room of the Cooper Center exploded.
The Scots (23-4) will travel to DePauw this weekend for a first round meeting against Otterbein. The winner advances to play the winner between LaRocke and pod-host — and a a general consensus No. 1 seed in the unseeded bracket — DePauw.
With Ferrum College and automatic qualifier Christopher Newport University also receiving spots in the bracket the USA South Athletic Conference placed three teams in the field of 64. The last week had been filled with speculation and anxiety as the experts shied away from saying the USAC was for worthy of three bids despite MC, CNU and FC all holding spots in the USA Today top 25 and six of their combined 11 losses coming to each other.
