Morning fire severely injures 70-year-old Maryville woman; cause of blaze under investigation

A 70-year-old Maryville woman is in critical condition following a fire Tuesday morning at her Sevier Avenue residence this morning, according to a release from Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong.

Shirley Ann Shields was initially taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center by Rural/Metro Ambulance Service. She is currently being transported by Rural/Metro to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.
 
At around 8:30 a.m., BCSO deputies, along with the Blount County Fire Department and Rural/Metro Ambulance Service, responded to the fire after a passerby saw smoke and flames coming from the house, according to the release. Members of the Blount County Fire Department found Shields lying on the floor in a hallway and carried her out.
 
Fire investigators with the Blount County Sheriff’s Office are working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
 
The Blount County Fire Department activated its “Hot Team,” which it utilizes in situations where quick mutual aid is needed. The “Hot Team” consists of two firefighters from each fire department in Blount County.
