Power outage hits McGhee Tyson, Hunt Road area

From Staff Reports

A power outage affected McGhee Tyson Airport and a major part of Springbrook and West Hunt Road after two large tree limbs fell behind two houses on Ramsey Street, near Hunt Road, taking out a breaker at the Proffitt Springs substation.

Operations at McGhee Tyson Airport have not been interrupted and outside power has been restored to the facility, said Trevis Gardner, vice president of operations for Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority.

Mainly lighting was affected, but the airport has a backup power system, and outside power has already been restored after a switch to another substation.

“It’s an inconvenience, but it doesn’t cripple operations,” Gardner said. “Everything is operating as normal. All the critical systems are on backup power.”

Troy Morgan, a representative with Alcoa Electric, said the limbs fell at about 9:10 this morning. Morgan said he does not know how long power will be out. The electric company will have to cut power to the lines, remove the trees and set a power pole.
