18-year-old Maryville man, Stacy Elijah Smith, charged in Big Lots attack
From Staff Reports
An 18-year-old Maryville man was charged with attempted aggravated rape in connection with an attack on a woman at the Big Lots in Alcoa on Aug. 31, the Alcoa Police Department announced Tuesday.
Stacy Elijah Smith, 18, who has recently been living at Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries, was being held at the Blount County Jail pending a hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court. Smith also is being investigated by the Knoxville Police Department in connection with other possible crimes.
Police officers responded at about 5 p.m. on Aug. 31 to Big Lots, 116 S. Hall Road, Alcoa, on the report of an attempted assault. A 53-year-old Tellico Plains woman reported that while she was using the restroom at the store, a man slid under her stall door and attempted to assault her while displaying a hammer. The woman kicked, screamed and fought off the suspect, at which point he fled from the store.
Following the incident, Alcoa Police Department released a store video of the incident, which led to a tip from the public. Further investigation by Alcoa Police Detective Kris Sanders led to the arrest of Smith.
“The information came from an individual that saw the news coverage,” Sanders told The Daily Times Tuesday. “The person was familiar with the suspect. He had spoken with several other people, and all of them agreed based on the way the suspect moved in the video and his mannerisms, they believed the individual was a very strong candidate based on his past behavior. I ran with it from there.
“I was looking for him in a certain area (Monday),” Sanders continued. “I was leaving my card with people. Someone called and he was in their presence at that point. I went to Knoxville and picked him up.”
Sanders said Smith gave a detailed confession of his involvement in the incident, but any motives will have be determined in court.
