An accident Monday afternoon at the intersection of Airbase Road and Wrights Ferry Road in Alcoa sent a motorcycle rider and his female passenger to the hospital.
Scott Shaw, 34, of Papillion, Neb., and his passenger, Sara Butcher, 28, of Sedgwick, Kan., were traveling east on Airbase Road on a 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle, traveling at a high rate of speed, according to Sgt. Hank Morris of the Alcoa Police Department.
A 2006 Nissan Sentra, driven by 20-year-old Elizabeth Pass of McCarty Road, Louisville, was at a stop sign waiting to make a left turn onto Wrights Ferry Road.
As Pass’s vehicle stopped, Shaw’s motorcycle swerved to avoid hitting Pass, but the motorcycle locked down and slid into the vehicle, causing both Shaw and Butcher to slide underneath it, Morris said.
Shaw and Butcher were taken via Rural/Metro to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where Shaw was in stable condition, according to the nursing supervisor’s office.
No information was available on Butcher’s condition. Pass was not injured.
The Alcoa Police and Fire Departments were on the scene, along with Rural/Metro. The call of the accident came in at about 4:12 p.m. Traffic was backed up and had to be detoured, Morris said.
