Clinton man arrested on assault, kidnapping charges
From Staff Reports
KNOXVILLE — Knox County Sheriff’s deputies took a Clinton man into custody early Monday evening after he was on the run for kidnapping and assaulting his estranged wife at gunpoint.
Stephen Richard Mayes, 41, is being charged with especially aggravated kidnapping, carjacking, and aggravated assault, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
He showed up at a Tennova emergency room and hospital officials called 911. Deputies took him into custody without incident.
Mayes was arrested in Blount County last month on a domestic assault charge.
On Monday, Mayes allegedly forced his way at gunpoint into the car of his wife after she arrived for work at a Kingston Pike address.
He then reportedly drove around in the car and stopped at a Pilot convenience store on Campbell Station Road, parking behind a nearby building.
He then tried to force his wife into the car trunk and threatened her, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Mayes also allegedly tried to choke her before she escaped.
She was taken by ambulance to Turkey Creek Medical Center on Parkside Drive.
A search for Mayes lasted more than three hours and included dogs and a helicopter.
Mayes was arrested July 7 in Blount County on a domestic assault charge. The next day, he broke into his wife’s apartment.
When law enforcement arrived, he told them he wanted to kill himself. He was later committed to a veterans facility in Murfreesboro.
