A vehicle outside an Alcoa apartment complex was destroyed Thursday by a fire that firefighters believe was caused by electrical problems.
Alcoa firefighters responded to 114 Harding St. at 2:06 p.m. and arrived five minutes later to find the 2004 Kia Sorenton engulfed in flames.
Alternator issues
Alcoa Fire Lt. Bill Smock said the owner of the vehicle, Wanda Smalley, advised that she was having issues with the alternator and had started the car to allow it to warm up. Firefighters aren’t sure how long the vehicle was left unattended before the fire broke out.
“She said she just heard a couple pops in the engine,” Smock said. The smoke from the fire was visible from as far away as Anderson Lumber Company on Louisville Road, Smock said. No vehicles were parked nearby and no one was injured, he added.
One support truck, one engine and four firefighters from the Alcoa Fire Department responded. The fire was controlled by 2:20 p.m., but the SUV was considered a total loss.
