Friendly felines at Blount County Animal Center in need of a home

Friendly felines are looking for a good home.
That’s the message the Blount County Animal Center is sending out to the public. Due to a recent influx of strays and owner-surrendered cats and kittens, the shelter is offering low-cost adoption fees on all its feline animals. These special rates range from $15 to $35 and will be offered until the shelter can reduce its cat population to a more sustainable level, shelter director Charlie Rafford said.
“This spring and summer we’ve had a large influx of cats and kittens come in to the center,” Rafford said. “It’s my understanding it’s this way every year. It’s a cyclical thing.”
Rafford also said it’s traditionally been easier to adopt out dogs than it is to find people to adopt cats.
“We’re very successful at adopting dogs, but cats pose a greater challenge as far as finding folks who want to give them a loving home,” Rafford said. “What I’ve ascertained as I’ve been here is that the cats are more difficult to get adopted and (also) take longer to get adopted.”
The shelter currently has about 14 adult cats and 20 adolescent cats ranging anywhere from just a few weeks to six months old.
Those interested in adoption can visit the center, located at 233 Currie Ave., Maryville. Operating hours for adoptions are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The public can also visit the shelter’s website — http://blounttn.org — and see a complete list of all available cats, along with pictures and profile information for each animal.
Special adoption rates are as follow:
• Kittens: $15 each
• Adult Females: $35 each
• Adult Males: $25 each
• Senior Cats: $20 each
• Barn Cats: $15 each
