Hospital stay delays preliminary hearing for murder suspect
From Staff Reports
A hospital stay by murder suspect Danny Ray Brewer forced the postponement of his preliminary hearing Monday.
Brewer’s first court appearance was reset for 9 a.m. Friday by Blount County General Sessions Court Judge Michael A. Gallegos.
Brewer, 27, complained he was ill and was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital Saturday evening. Officials declined to explain his medical problem.
Blount County Assistant District Attorney Clinton Frazier said as far as he knows Brewer has not yet hired an attorney. He expects Brewer, a former Blount County and Rockford deputy, to ask that the public defender’s office be appointed to represent him at the hearing Friday.
Brewer was charged with criminal homicide in the shooting death of his wife, 29-year-old Jennifer L. Brewer, in their home in a Sevier Avenue apartment complex.
Officers answered the call of a shooting at 11:19 a.m. Sept. 8 to the Brewer apartment.
They found Brewer “screaming and covered with blood,” according to the police report. A naked Brewer was taken out of the room and the gun apparently used in the shooting was secured.
His wife was found lying on a bed face up and bleeding from the left side of her chest.
She had no pulse, was not breathing and blood was coming from a large wound in her chest. She was transported to Blount Memorial Hospital where she was declared dead.
Her husband was taken into custody and was later charged with criminal homicide. He remains in Blount County Jail under $950,000 bond pending the hearing Friday.
