Man dies from injuries in accident Monday on Alcoa Highway
From Staff Reports
An Alcoa man died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident Monday on Alcoa Highway.
According to Sgt. Bud Cooper, of the Alcoa Police Department, at about 8:58 a.m. Efrain Gutierrez Cruz, 26, whose listed address was Value Place on Singleton Station Road, was driving a 1996 Nissan Maxima when he attempted to turn south on Alcoa Highway from Starlite Drive.
Alcoa traffic investigators said Cruz pulled out in front of a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Kimberly Queener, 22, Brown School Road, Maryville, who was driving northbound on the highway. The Maxima collided with the SUV, critically injuring Cruz, and causing nonlife-threatening injuries to Queener.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash, Cooper said.
Cruz was transported via Rural/Metro to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he died of his injuries at about 1:15 p.m. Queener was transported to Blount Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released.
The Alcoa Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene. The accident is under investigation.
