Maryville men fined for shooting two bear cubs, avoid jail time

Two Maryville men were fined, ordered to pay restitution, court costs and given suspended jail sentences in court Friday morning for shooting two black bear cubs in November in the Top O’ the World community.

Corey Martin Campbell, 19, Butler Mill Road, and Jesse Lee McClellan, 18, Patrick Avenue, were charged with hunting out of season, hunting from a motorized vehicle, spotlighting, criminal trespass and other charges in the case.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Officer Greg Julian was in charge of the case.

Campbell got the more serious penalties from Blount County General Sessions Court Judge Michael Galegos.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of hunting in closed season, for which he got six months suspended sentence with supervised probation. He must also pay TWRA $200 in restitution in each case.

He must perform 150 hours of community service, his hunting privileges were suspended for five years, and his weapon was forfeited.

He was sentenced to 30 days in Blount County Jail for hunting from a motorized vehicle and also for criminal trespass, all suspended if he is on good behavior for 11 months and 29 days in each case.

A spotlighting charge was dismissed.

He is to have no contact with the Top O’ the World community.

In addition, Campbell was fined $250 for simple possession of drugs (marijuana) and $150 for possession of drug paraphernalia. He will be given judicial diversion if he does not have any other offenses for 11 months and 29 days, during which time he will be on supervised probation.

Six months suspended

McClellan was sentenced to six months suspended sentence for two counts of hunting in closed season, provided he is on good behavior for the six months. He must also pay TWRA $200 in restitution for each case.

He must perform 100 hours of community service and have no contact with Top O’ the World community.

His hunting privileges were revoked for five years.

For spotlighting and criminal trespass he was sentenced in each case to 30 days all suspended provided he is on good behavior for six months.

The hunting from motor craft charge was dismissed.

In addition, both Campbell and McClellan must pay court costs.
