On schedule: Empty Pantry foods ready for packing today

By Linda Braden Albert | (lindaba@thedailytimes.com)

Everything is on schedule for packing of Empty Pantry Fund food bags beginning at 6 p.m. today at the Tennessee Army National Guard Armory. Volunteers are invited to come to the armory to get involved in the 60-year-old tradition of neighbor helping neighbor in Blount County.

“The food came in today on four tractor-trailers,” EPF President Lon Fox said Wednesday. Everything went smoothly, and we’ll be ready.”

Delivery will begin early Sunday morning. Routes will be available today for volunteers who wish to take food and toys, provided through Junior Service League of Maryville’s Toys for Blount County, directly to those who signed up at the annual October clearinghouse.

Toys were packed earlier this week.

Fox said donations as of today are at about 56 percent of the total funds needed to pay for the foods.

“We need to keep raising money,” he said. “We’ve still got a way to go.”

He said the sheet collections, in which members of the Jaycees and JayTeens carried sheets along Saturday’s Maryville/Alcoa Jaycees Christmas Parade route to collect money for EPF, show what can happen when everyone pitches in for a good cause.

“People threw in change from their pockets, and we ended up with $991,” he said. “You don’t have to send a check for $1,000 or $500 or $250. It all adds up.”
