Veteran gets Battle of Bulge flag for courthouse

From Staff Reports

Thanks to the efforts of a Blount County veteran, the Battle of the Bulge memorial at the courthouse will now have a flag to fly on important days like Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Sam Russell, a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army, wanted this important memorial to have its own special flag, something it’s never had before.

He searched various Internet sites and came up with a design plan that he then sent to a flag maker in Pennsylvania. The flag was made and shipped here to Maryville where it will now fly next to the Battle of the Bulge memorial that lists the names of Blount Countians who fought in the World War II battle.

Donations came in quickly to pay for the flag, Russell said. He has received many favorable comments on its design.

Nathan Weinbaum, service officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Blount County, agreed it was time for this monument to have a flag to fly as we mark important times in this nation’s history.
