David George Bennie

David George Bennie, age 77, passed away in Naples, Fla., on November 5, 2012, of complications from heart bypass surgery. He was preceded in death by parents, George and Anna Bennie. Born in Moosic, Pa., he was a graduate of Penn State with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering. He worked 40 years as a synthetic fibers development engineer for DuPont, mostly in Wilmington, N.C. Dave was a 50-year member of the Sierra Club. He had a passionate love of nature. He led several national Sierra Club backpacking trips to the Wind River Range of Wyoming and the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina and Tennessee. He liked hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Forest. In Naples, he enjoyed volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Survivors include his beloved wife of 31 years, Linda Carpenter Bennie; and stepson, Star Ennis Elton, III. A memorial service will be held at Trinity by the Cove Episcopal Church in late January. Memorials may be made to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida or Trinity by the Cove Episcopal Church.
