Dorothy Mae Lewis
Mrs. Dorothy Mae Lewis, of Maryville, departed this earth to be with Jesus early Sunday morning, October 7, 2012. Mrs. “Dot,” as she was affectionately known, was born in Tennille, Ga., grew up in Alcoa, lived in Sweetwater, Atlanta, Ga., Washington, D.C., and at her passing, again called Blount County home. “Mrs. Dot” was a loving and gentle spirit and she devoted her entire life to caring for others. She had a beautiful soprano voice and was a member of the former “Golden Echoes” gospel group. “Mrs. Dot” was a retiree from the federal government, she loved to garden, shop, take care of her family, but more than anything, she loved the Lord. There wasn’t anything that she wouldn’t do for someone in need and everywhere she went, she touched lives with her sweet and generous spirit. “Mrs. Dot” was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church/Knoxville and the former First Lady of Lincoln Temple United Church of Christ in Washington, D.C., and Mother Love Baptist Church in Louisville. She was preceded in death by husband of 45 years, Rev. Dr. Benjamin E. Lewis, Sr.; daughter, Bridgette A. Carston; mother, Annie L. Jenkins; and father, William Jenkins. She leaves to mourn her passing, devoted sons, Rev. Benjamin (Tiffany) E. Lewis, Jr., John W. Lewis and Warren R. Lewis; sister, Jessie (Curtis) Gibson; and brother, William (Barbara) Jenkins; grandchildren, Latoya, Dante, Christian, Briana, Destiny, Juwan and Benjamin III; in addition to numerous other relatives, devoted friends and lives that she touched everywhere. Her celebration of life will be held on Thursday morning, October 11, at First Calvary Baptist Church: 1750 Delaware Avenue., Knoxville, TN. 37921. Family visitation will be from 1l a.m.-noon, with the celebration to follow at noon, Rev. Dr. Lorrin Harris officiating, Rev. R.J. Miller, eulogist. Interment to follow at Sherwood Gardens, Alcoa.
