Velma Dunn
Velma Pauline Myers Dunn passed away January 15, 2013, at the Skyland Health Care in Sylva, N.C., at age 91. Velma had lived all her life in Townsend, until her recent stay in North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Commodore Clifton (Cliff) Dunn (on January 14, 1985); parents, John N. and Edna Garner Myers; and brothers, Ralph Myers and JC Myers. Survivors include her son, Nelson Dunn; daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Bill Davis) of Whittier, N.C.; and by brother, Robert Myers, Maryville; granddaughter, Kimberly (Mrs. Peter Radcliffe) of High Point, N.C.; and special foster grandson, Pearson Stanley of Clyde, N.C. Velma graduated from Townsend High School, class of 1940, and then worked as an electrician’s helper at ALCOA during World War II. Her husband Clifton was employed by the Great Smokies National Park Service and Velma was a member of the Park Wives Association. During this time, she acquired an interest in arts and crafts and made many decorative wreaths and candles. In the early 1960s, Velma worked for the Great Smoky Mountain Natural History Association and ran their store at the Cable Mill in Cades Cove. In declining health for the past year, she was a resident of Skyland Health Care in Sylva, N.C. The staff at Skyland Care provided wonderful loving care and support to Velma and her family during this time. Special thanks go to the staff for guiding us through this period. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013, in the Smith West Chapel with the interment to follow in the Tuckaleechee United Methodist Church Cemetery.
