William (Bill) Asbury
William (Bill) Asbury, age 82, of Alcoa Tenn., passed away on Friday, January 18, 2013. He was born in Knoxville and was a graduate of Karns High School and the University of Tennessee. Bill was a member of the UT baseball team who played in the 1951 College World Series and was lifelong friends with his teammates. He served as Colonel in the Tennessee Air National Guard at McGhee Tyson for thirty years until his retirement in 1984. After retirement, he helped implement Blount County’s automated 911 system. He was a member of the Alcoa Kiwanis and attended the First United Methodist Church of Alcoa. He served as Chairman of the Blount County Parks and Recreation Commission from 1990 to 1992. He is preceded in death by parents, William and Cora Lee Asbury; son, Steve Asbury of Alcoa, Tenn.; sisters, Johnnye Fitzgerald, Katherine Hopkins, Mary Lee Butler, Jane Asbury, all of Knoxville; brother, Jack Asbury. Survived by wife of 60 years, Barbara June Walker Asbury from Hardin Valley; children, Jim Asbury of Alcoa, Scott Asbury and wife Mamie, Atlanta, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Nancy Asbury of Friendsville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jesse Asbury, Jeremy Asbury, Gus Asbury, Wyatt Asbury, April Payne, Brandy Whitehead; nieces and nephew, Donna Patschke of Karns, Martha Ford of Atlanta, Ga., and Buddy Hopkins. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2013, at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home in Maryville with the funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. The interment will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Hardin Valley.
