Rich medical history of Blount Memorial Hospital is previewed
A section in today’s edition includes a preview of the contents of a hard-bound volume of Blount Memorial Hospital History which The Daily Times will publish in December, in time for treasured Christmas gifts.
Edited by Times Editor Dean Stone, it is the work of many individuals and is the first history of the hospital in the 65 years since its opening. Newly retired Administrator Joe Dawson was the leader in helping secure needed input from retired doctors, current hospital department heads, current and former members of the board of directors, all of which was done in cooperation with the current management headed by CEO Don Heinemann.
Retired doctors Ted Flickinger, Robert H. “Bob” Haralson III, Homer Isbell and Norman McKinnon were especially helpful. One of the most helpful individuals with hospital history was Ann Thompson, now retired from 40 years of service as administrative assistant to the administrator. Well known local historian Ken Cornett, Blount County Historian Lorene B. Smith, retired nuclear engineer and genealogist Ralph Lee and Neal Stone dug for some of the hard-to-find details.
The backbone of the production who did an outstanding job was Jessica Stith, who is Project Manager of Blount Memorial Hospital Foundation and Community Outreach. An especially well qualified writer and editor, the former Daily Times staffer bore the brunt of the writing and editing at a time when she was busy adjusting to a new job.
Graphic designer Donna J. Wilson of The Daily Times and the editor worked hand in hand in organizing the stories and photographs onto the pages. Times Chief Photographer Daryl Sullivan toned all the photographs for the best reproduction.
And most of all, our appreciation goes to the advertisers who made possible this preservation of local history of Blount Memorial Hospital, an outstanding Tennessee community-owned hospital which was founded in 1947. It is an important part of our heritage which is treasured by our readers.
The entire project is a labor of love from individuals who fully appreciate the value of a community-owned hospital whose thousands of caregivers have provided medical treatment to more than 1 million individuals over the past 65 years.
