A well deserved break: Long drives help Maryville blow out Knoxville West

Maryville earned its bye week.
After toughing out a Week 0 win over Webb and using the big play to handle rival Alcoa last week, the Rebels dinked and dunked their way to blowing out visiting Knox West, 42-20, Friday night on Jim Renfro Field.
“This was a pretty tough stretch for us,” Maryville coach George Quarles said. “We knew that going in. We get an off week next week, so we’re excited about that.”
John Garrett ran for two touchdowns and gained 254 total yards — running 18 times for 109 yards and completing 9-of-14 passes for 146 yards — to lead the Rebels to a 3-0 (1-0 District 4-AAA) start.
“That’s going to be our toughest three-game stretch of the schedule,” Garrett said. “Sevier County is going to be a great team, but to have three tough ones in a row and come out 3-0 into the bye week is a big accomplishment.”
“He’s playing well,” Quarles said of his quarterback. “(He’s) making really good decisions, under control out there. He doesn’t get in too big of a hurry. We’re really pleased with what John Garrett has done so far.”
Running back Jaylen Burgess ran 17 times for 94 yards and scored three times. Backfield mate Shawn Prevo, who sat out the first quarter, ran 14 times for 52 yards and a touchdown. Maryville gained 420 yards on 68 snaps, going 6-of-9 on third down conversions and moved the chains 27 times in the game. West had 15 first downs.
The Rebels used touchdown drives of 96, 84, 83 and 55 yards on their way to building 28-0 lead by halftime. The play count on the drive chart read 16, 7, 7 and 10 en route to the scores.
“The first half I thought we played really well,” Quarles said. “Smart, took what they gave us, broke some tackles.
“Last week we did it with the big play. This week I thought we just did what they gave us. They weren’t going to give up the big play. They have too many fast guys.”
While West kept punting, Maryville kept scoring during the first two quarters.
After forcing a West punt to start the game, Burgess plunged in from 1 yard out for a 7-0 lead on a drive that saw six first downs and a pair of third down conversions.
“Whatever we can get, we take,” Burgess said. “Big plays matter, every play matters. We play hard every play.”
After another West punt, this time following a three-and-out, Garrett was in with a 1-yard keeper for a 14-0 advantage.
Another West punt later and Garrett was in the end zone again, this time on a 15-yard scoring run to make it 21-0 and cap a 96-yard drive that included back-to-back completions of 41 and 27 yards, Maryville’s lone lengthy plays on the night.
Garrett found Burgess out of the backfield on third-and-6 and the tailback turned the screen into big yards, taking the Rebels from their own 8 to the 49. The next snap saw Garrett hit a wide open Kelby Brock in the seam to move the ball down to the 22.
“If it works, I’m not really complaining,” Garrett said of the methodical drives. “I think it takes a lot out of the defense. With our no huddle, we get up there, up-tempo.
“I don’t think a defense, like tonight, I don’t think West had a lot of time to set up. We shifted what we ran. So I think that helped.”
Prevo put Maryville up 28-0 with a 4-yard touchdown run with 33 seconds left on the game clock.
West’s Alex Burch blocked a punt and recovered the loose ball in the end zone for the visiting Rebels’ first points. Quarterback Seth Marshall, who finished with 155 total yards, dove in from 2 yards out in the third quarter and Trey Davis scored as time expired to bring West (1-1, 0-1) within 42-20.
Burgess added a pair of touchdown runs — 12 and 3 yards, respectively — in the second half, with the final scoring run capping a 15 play, 80 yard drive that took nearly eight minutes off the third quarter clock.
“It’s hard to go 95 yards, and it’s especially hard to go 16 plays,” Quarles said. “I thought we did a good job on third down.”
“Four yards, four yards, four yards,” Garrett said of the drives. “That adds up after a while.”
