CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY CAPTAINS 45

MARYVILLE COLLEGE FIGHTING SCOTS 31

CNU 7 17 7 14 — 45

MC 7 3 7 14 — 31

FIRST QUARTER

CNU 6:37 - Markeese Stovall 9 run (Mason Studer kick)

Tyler Portell got a gift from MC’s Evan Pittenger on a misfire to Ed Johnson that went straight into Portell’s numbers. The Caps set up at the MC 35 and after Paul Dukes picked up 10 yards to start the drive it was four straight rushes from Stovall to reach the shade of the pine trees in the Court Street end zone.

5 plays | 35yds | 1:51 | CNU 7-0

MC 3:03 - Travis Felder 14 pass from Eric Sisson (Dylan Miller lick)

Sisson turned MC’s answer into a statement rolling out and threading the needle to Jared Miller for the first of the tight end’s four catches. Felder followed with a rip for 10 behind Devin Brunsvold’s monster block claiming two Captains for the price of one. Felder came through for 18 more on second-and-15 and added his first big catch on the score coming out of the backfield while the Captains secondary was focused on Blake Williams 10 yards up field.

10 plays | 74yds | 3:28 | 7-7

SECOND QUARTER

CNU 14:07 - Studer 31 field goal

The Captains return game came up with the first of a series of midfield returns and it was enough for CNU. Edwards turned a busted play into a 17-yard scamper before the Scots stymied the drive and forced the kick.

9 plays | 37yds | 3:38 | CNU 10-7

MC 8:54 Miller 24 field goal

The Scots put together the longest drive of the day by either side converting three third downs with Chad Brooks getting the first taking a screen for 18, Williams getting the second on a cross and then getting the third on a screen. The magic ran out at the CNU 6 when the Captains stuffed third and-goal and bringing in Miller to tie the game.

15 plays | 69yds | 5:13 | 10-10

CNU 2:28 - Paul Dukes 17 run (Studer kick)

After CNU went three-and-out on back-to-back possessions, special teams reignited CNU’s spark as the half approached. Justin Williams took the MC punt 38 yards. Dukes ran for 3 but a facemask added 15 to set up a first at the MC 17. Dukes did the rest.

2 plays | 35yds | :18 | CNU 17-10

CNU Rudy Rudoplh 13 pass from Aaron Edwards (Studer kick)

The Scots fumbled the kickoff and CN recovered at the MC 15 to rename the game catch me if you can. Rudoph’s catch was the high point for the CNU passing game and the Scots were trying to overcome the two score lead the entire second half.

3 plays | 15yds | :48 | CNU 24-10

THIRD QUARTER

MC 9:46 - Felder 29 run (Miller kick)

Maryville was methodical after stuffing CNU’s opening drive, driving the field with a mix of Felder runs and quick passes. Sisson went right and held the ball just like they draw it up, pitching it wide to Felder, The junior went straight toward the concession stand and could have ordered a hot dog after being hit in the end zone and sent over the ropes.

7 plays | 61 yds | 2:47 | CNU 24-17

CNU 4:14 - Dykes 1 run (Studer kick)

The Scots chance to tie after a defensive stand went the wrong way when Tyshawn Harris intercepted Sisson’s pass for Williams after dropping a pick two plays earlier. Starting from the Scots 9, CNU captainized on the turnover after being bailed out on third-and-goal with defensive holding call on a failed third-and-goal. With a fresh set of downs inside the MC 3, the Caps banging in on third-and-and-18 inches.

6 plays | 1- yds | 1;56 | CNU 31-17

FOURTH QUARTER

MC 14:54 - Pittenger 5 run (Miller kick)

The Scots fought their way back down the field in reply behind Brooks runs right, Felder runs left and Williams receptions over the middle. Johnson made a standup grab for 16 before Pittenger turned miracle maker. Facing fourth-and-4 at the 17 the snap came low and early in the shotgun. The freshman raced after the ball, collected it on the move and with Caps closing in back at the 33 let loose with a prayer that found Felder at the 5.

11 plays | 79yds | 4:15 | CNU 31-24

CNU 4:42 - Marcus Morrast 28 run (Studer kick)

Both teams had fourth-and-go-for-it failures but with new life the Scots threw their third pick with Daniel Lewis stepping in front of Miller. Morrast took the snap in the Wildcat package to catch MC of guard and almost put the game out of reach.

5 plays | 52yds | 3:18 | CNU 38-24

MC 2:58 - Felder 1 run (Miller kick)

The Scots hurry up got big play after big play with Felder ripping off 12 and Tim Foster making a 14-yard reception to convert third and long. Pittenger turned a bust into a 29-yard scramble and got half the distance to the goal as he was brought down by his facemask to save the touchdown.

7 plays | 64 yds | 1:38 | CNU 38-31

CNU :52 - Dukes 24 run (Studer kick)

The Captains ran all the way to the win with the final score that not even the fantastic pace of the fourth quarter could allow for two more MC scores.

4 plays | 47yds | 2:06 | CNU 45-31
