By David Cobb | (sports@thedailytimes.com)

TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS 55, TROY TROJANS 48

UT 21 10 3 21 — 55

Troy 10 20 10 8 — 48

FIRST QUARTER

Troy 11:09 – Will Scott 37 field goal

A 32-yard pass from Corey Robinson to Chris Williams down the Tennessee sideline paved the way for the Trojans to go ahead on the game’s opening drive.

10 plays | 59 yards | 3:51 | Troy 3-0

UT 7:36 – Cordarelle Patterson 14 pass from Tyler Bray (Michael Palardy kick)

Justin Hunter, Raijon Neal and Mychal Rivera narrowly missed potential touchdown catches on UT’s first drive before Patterson found himself in one-on-one coverage for a slant route to the goal line, giving the Vols their first lead.

13 plays | 65 yards | 3:33 | UT 7-3

Troy 4:42 – Shawn Southward 7 run (Scott kick)

Consecutive third down offside penalties from Vol linebackers A.J. Johnson and Curt Maggitt in the red zone gave Troy fresh life. After the penalties, Southward went untouched into the south end zone.

8 plays | 75 yards | 3:02 | Troy 10-7

UT 3:03 – Marlin Lane 17 run (Palardy kick)

A face mask penalty took the Vols from the 50 to the 35. Bray found Zach Rogers on an 18-yard out route on the subsequent play. Lane promptly covered the remaining 17 with his run through the left side of the line.

4 plays | 52 yards | 1:31 | UT 14-10

UT 0:44 – Hunter 21 pass from Bray (Palardy kick)

Atoning for his earlier drop, Hunter laid out to catch a dart from Bray in the checkerboards to close out the first quarter scoring.

5 plays | 47 yards | 1:30 | UT 21-10

SECOND QUARTER

UT 11:06 – Hunter 40 pass from Bray (Palardy kick)

On the opening play of the drive, Bray found Patterson on the Troy sideline. Patterson proceeded to dance 41 yards into Trojan territory. On the ensuing play Bray aired it out to Hunter for his second touchdown catch of the game

2 plays | 81 yards | 0:37 | UT 28-10

Troy 6:40 – Southward 1 run (Scott kick)

A 37-yard pass from Robinson to Eric Thomas gashed the UT defense on a third-and-long. After UT was forced to burn a timeout for having too many players on the field for a field goal attempt, Troy changed its mind and converted on fourth down.

12 plays | 72 yards | 4:19 | UT 28-17

Troy 4:37 – Chip Reeves 51 pass from Deon Anthony (kick failed)

After UT’s first non-scoring offensive drive of the game, Troy took over and exploited the Volunteer secondary once again.

2 plays | 66 yards | 0:31 | UT 28-23

Troy 1:12 – Anthony 28 run (Scott kick)

A 39-yard halfback draw on third-and-16 from Southward allowed Troy to continue on its third consecutive touchdown drive. Anthony barreled over UT’s LaDarrell McNeil at the three yard line and fell into the end zone to regain the lead for the Trojans.

7 plays | 79 yards | 2:21 | Troy 30-28

UT 0:00 – Palardy 19 field goal

This time it was a 58-yard Patterson performance via a Bray pass that set up a UT score. Two incomplete passes and an unsuccessful Lane plunge inside the 10 forced Palardy onto the field to close the half.

6 plays | 73 yards | 1:12 | UT 31-30

THIRD QUARTER

UT 11:47 – Palardy 31 field goal

Lane busted a 37-yard run on the half’s opening drive, but similarly to their final first-half drive, the Vols stalled in the red zone.

7 plays | 55 yards | 3:06 | UT 34-30

Troy 7:31 - Thomas 3 pass from Anthony (Scott kick)

A 34-yard pinpoint bomb from Robinson to Reeves punched the ticket for another Trojan visit to the red zone. Troy opted to finish the drive with the mobile option of its quarterback duo at the helm.

9 plays | 65 yards | 4:16 | Troy 37-34

Troy :34 - Scott 42 field goal

After recovering an Alton Howard fumble on the Vols 4, Troy struck with the big play again. This time it was a 46-yard pickup from Robinson to Thomas on third down that gave life to the Trojans drive.

12 plays | 96 yards | 4:44 | Troy 40-34

FOURTH QUARTER

UT 13:38 - Neal 23 pass from Bray (Palardy kick)

Bray marched the offense down the field in relatively methodical fashion until he found Neal streaking down the UT sideline towards the north end zone.

8 plays | 90 yards | 1:50 | UT 41-40

Troy 3:14 - Robinson 67 pass from Thomas (Thomas reception)

A dazzling, leaping one-handed reception by Thomas followed by a sprint to the end zone gave Troy its first lead of the fourth quarter, and officially made the UT defensive performance the worst in school history.

3 plays | 93 yards | 1:26 | Troy 48-41.

UT 2:54 - Hunter 46 pass from Bray (Palardy kick)

The Vols wasted no time in answering Troy’s touchdown. After a pass interference penalty gave UT possession in Troy territory, Hunter hauled in his third touchdown of the game.

1 play | 61 yards | 0:16 | 48-48

UT 1:25 - Lane 9 run (Palardy kick)

An 18-yard dump off throw to Lane got the Vols into Trojan territory. A Hunter reception covering 24 yards set up Lane’s surge to the checkerboards through the right side of the line.

6 plays | 66 yards | 0:46 | UT 55-48
