The defense of the title started months ago in the weight room and class room, but the Maryville College football team opened camp Friday with 125 players reporting.
Head coach Mike Rader starts his second season with 18 starters returning — nine of them all-conference selections — from last year’s 6-4 (5-2) season that ended a share of the USA South Athletic Conference championship.
Maryville College is listing 72 freshman that reported to start camp Friday. Among those are some well known Blount County players including Alcoa’s Ezekiel Koko and William Blount’s Daniel Blevins, as well as, new Maryville High alums Nick Myers, Trenton Shuler, Keegan Morris, Logan Winders, Nick Heinnmann and Hunter Hawkins. In total MC is listing 14 players from Blount County and another 18 from the area.
The Scots have seven arrivals from Florida, a dozen from Georgia, six from Texas, another dozen from North Carolina and a trio from Alabama.
Sophomore Evan Pittenger (Lincoln County) returns as the only seasoned quarterback after Eric Sisson did not return. In the mix at signal-caller are sophomores Mickey Chait (Knox West) and Brady Brown (Halls) along with four incoming freshman. Among those newcomers starting the fall listed at quarterback are Myers, T.J. Rubin (Fairly), Brandon Daley (Glenwood, Ala.) and Kiefer Young (Colleyville Heritage, Texas).
The Fighting Scots will open the season at Berry College on September 7 and play the first three — all nonconference games — on the road. Maryville holds its home opener, conference opener and homecoming game Sept. 28 against Methodist University.
