Tennessee’s Free Fishing Day is June 8, and Free Fishing Week is June 8-14, all sponsored by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Everyone fishes for free that Saturday on any public waters, and youths through age 15 can fish for free the following week. There are many special events planned for that Saturday. A frequently updated list can be found at http://www.tnwildlife.org ; select “For Anglers” then “2013 Kids Fishing Events.” Check it for specific details. Some of the local events will be listed here in two weeks.
• Do you own a Mossberg model 500 shotgun? If so you are in good — and large — company. O.F. Mossberg & Sons has recently marked the production of its ten millionth model 500 pump shotgun. This gun is still very popular today with hunters and shooters worldwide. Its tactical version, the model 590, is used by the U.S. military and is preferred by hundreds of law enforcement agencies nationwide, as well as armed citizens for self protection.
The first model 500 came off the line in 1961 and reached this ten million milestone in an unprecedented 52 years, making it the fastest-selling shotgun in history. The North Haven, Conn. company was founded in 1919 and is the oldest family-owned firearms manufacturer in America.
Mossberg is celebrating this occasion by inviting proud owners of the model 500 to share their memories on the Mossberg Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com . The stories could be used in future catalogs and advertisements. For more go to http://www.mossberg.com .
• Do not miss the second annual “National Take Your Daughters to the Range Day” on June 15. Since its inauguration last year, the event is already becoming a family affair for moms, dads and sons, too. And, as last year, if you do not have a daughter, adopt one for the day.
Special events are planned for local ranges all over the country. Follow them on Twitter @NTYDTTRD for possible local activities, or tell your range operator to join in. Promotional materials are available.
• Women are the fastest growing demographic for shooting and hunting with firearms. This trend is especially true in the category of recreational shooting for self defense. Tennessee has about 413,000 active handgun carry permits issued to citizens.
The following information came from an article appearing in Florida’s Orlando Sentinel newspaper. It shows how dramatic the numbers can be:
More than one million Floridians have their concealed carry permit, but the gender and age bracket showing the largest increase might surprise you: It is women 66 years of age and older. Their numbers have jumped 619 percent since 2004, reports the Orlando Sentinel, and total nearly 35,000 individuals licensed to carry a firearm in the Sunshine State.
• On this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, enjoy yourselves, keep safe and keep in your prayers the men and women of our armed forces who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
