New additive helps solve boaters ethanoal issues
By Tom Wiest | wiest.tom@gmail
Good news for boaters, especially those that are using the common ethanol-blended gasoline in their engines. Volvo Penta has developed a fuel additive to prevent one of the two major problems with ethanol in marine engines.
First, and briefly, the problems. Ethanol has been mandated by the federal government to be mixed at the 10 percent level (called E10) into the nation’s gasoline to reduce air pollution. E15 has been passed by the U.S. Environmental Agency and will be here any day now. But ethanol is a solvent and it has harsh side effects.
Problem 1: In all engines ethanol dissolves residues and gunk in the fuel system and clogs fuel filters; it erodes some plastic and rubber parts and corrodes some metal parts.
Problem 2: In marine engines and many small engines, whose fuel systems must be vented (open) to the air and thus moisture, water collects in the tank and is absorbed by the ethanol. In the short term the water-alcohol mixture affects engine performance and mileage. In the long term phase separation will occur. Volvo Penta Ethanol Fuel Treatment can solve Problem 1. It contains special antioxidants to combat fuel breakdown and also contains chemical corrosion inhibitors that form a barrier.
Be advised that there is no additive on the market that can prevent or solve Problem #2, phase separation. The only remedy is to drain the fuel tank – and do not suck the water into the engine. The best prevention of phase separation is to keep the fuel tank full when it is idle or in storage. Get more information at http://www.boatus.org .
• A “Family Harmony Alert” needs to be issued this year, since so many hunting seasons open on or near Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.
Nov. 28 is the season opener for ducks for the Statewide Zone and it runs nonstop through Jan. 26; there is no early two-day hunt this year statewide.
Canada goose season for the Statewide Goose Zone opens early on Oct. 12-29 with the regular season on Nov. 28-Jan. 26. The Northwest Goose Zone dates are Oct. 12-17, Nov. 16-17 and Nov. 30 – Feb. 8. Most of the other goose species are open Nov. 24 – Feb. 8. Of course the new sandhill crane season runs Nov. 28 – Jan. 1. Other encroachments – or shall we say enhancements – on the Thanksgiving week include deer’s gun season, Nov. 23 – Jan. 5; black bear’s second season with dogs, Nov. 29 – Dec. 23, and all the small game species that began earlier in November. Enjoy.
