City of Maryville, choose carefully

Dear Editor:

I am a retired police officer after 28 years on the police force. I am not against motorcycle enthusiasts. I am not against public festivities. I am against this motorcycle special event in May.

My professional experience has shown that alcohol and crowds do not mix well together. They draw fringe elements that can destroy the festivities. Violence and lawlessness can and will probably occur.

It will be difficult to control the boundaries of this event even with fencing and security. The costs to contain and control this event will far exceed the economic benefits. There is also the issue of vicarious liability for the city and local businesses when there is an injury or death as a result of this alcohol-consuming event.

Where have society’s moral values gone? I say they’ve been replaced by potential economic gain. I should draw your attention to God’s Word and what He has to say about it. However, it has also been my experience that not many people heed what God says anymore. Therefore, I have appealed to practical considerations. Be careful what you choose.

In Jesus’ name,
