Reader concerned about tax increase
Mr. Little hit the nail dead center, “It’s for the children” or it’s for the children’s education. Think I’ve heard that quote on a couple property tax increases, did hear it when they voted for lottery, and heard it when they raised the cigarette tax 300 percent.
But I think math has changed since my school years.
School’s budget is $8.6 million shortfall, wheel tax will give them about $2.2 million and County Commission, spend that money guys, will give nine cents of property tax for about $3.3 million. So that is $8.6 minus $5.5 leaves $3.1 million short. Where is that coming from? And Commissioner Kirby is concerned it is nine cents this year, will it be 18 cents next year? Almost certain, sir.
I would like to see how many kids Blount County schools have had each year for past five years.
And why does the budget go up every year? And how did you have such a large shortfall, over l0 percent of your budget? Oh, and what happened to looking into county employees paying their fair share of health insurance premiums? Probably pushed aside again, and couple years ago was going to look at property tax rolls, find out who dropped off roll and not paying any taxes. Guess that got pushed aside too.
They can not ensure they have all tax revenues due the county, but can pass a referendum about Federal Park Service’s new overnight backwoods fee. This wheel tax will not ever go away, and will not be the only tax increase, it is like putting a Band-Aid on a severe cut.
We need a government that can manage this county’s budget and without wanting more money every year. Bet we have more new taxes in next 13 months.
