South Blount Utility to vote on fluoridation

Dear Editor:

Good news for customers of South Blount Utility District (SBCUD). Next month you’ll receive a letter stating that, with the following month’s bill, you’ll get a postage-paid card asking for your preference — fluoridation or non-fluoridation of your water. Your response will be mailed to an outside auditor to compile the votes.

After five years of attending SBCUD board meetings to educate them on the health hazards of fluoridation, we finally have an opportunity to discontinue this poison. Thanks go to Mayor Mitchell for requesting this audit.

Hydrofluosilicic acid, which the utility districts use, is not the natural mineral that is in virtually all waters. Their product comes from the discharge (waste product) of phosphate and aluminum plants. It’s so toxic that it must be delivered in special trucks because the chemical would eat through normal tankers.

Manager of SBCUD, Henry Durant, informed me that fluosilicic acid is used to etch glass. Imagine what this caustic substance does to your body. We know from scientific reports that ingesting it can cause fluorosis, thyroid problems, cancers, brittle bones and arthritis, lower children’s IQ, cause reproduction problems, and affect people with impaired kidney function. Toothpaste tubes instruct us to use topically and contact poison control if a pea-sized amount is swallowed. The ADA informs parents to use unfluoridated water to mix baby formulas. If you recall, SBCUD was once non-fluoridated when Manager Isom Lail surveyed his customers and got a positive response.

They wanted to ingest pure, clean water. Pro-fluoride people can add fluoride tablets to their diet or brush more often, while fluoridation forces an unapproved drug onto all citizens by an unelected local utility board.

When Mayor Cunningham forced SBCUD to start fluoridation, they brought unfluoridated water from their treatment plant for their own office consumption. I think that tells the whole story.

When you receive your postcard, vote to stop fluoridation.

Thanks,

Linda King
