Tax preparation assistance works
Income tax preparation assistance for Blount County has completed another successful season.
Volunteer tax counselors for AARP Tax-Aide e-filed federal income tax returns for almost 1,500 of our area households. Another 450 received assistance with questions about their taxes.
This service was only accomplished with tremendous community support from volunteers, local media and public service organizations in Blount County.
United Way of Blount County provided office space and a computer so that volunteers could take calls for appointments and answer questions. The appointment center was staffed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. U.S. Cellular provided two telephones and free service for the center’s nine volunteers to use.
The Blount County Public Library provided a spacious meeting room and the staff at the library also answered hundreds of telephone calls and forwarded inquiries to the United Way appointment center.
Thanks to The Maryville Daily Times for the publicity they provided concerning who to call for appointments and when and where the service was provided.
Most importantly, 30 dedicated counselors and support staff each gave a minimum of 50 hours to this program to help fellow Blount Countians file their tax returns.
Unfortunately there were fewer volunteers this year and many filers had to be turned away due to lack of time and availability. The program continues to grow in Blount County and volunteers are needed to sustain this growth.
