Thompson finishes leadership seminar; Young receives scholarship; Hatcher earns degree; Cox named Homecoming Queen

Will Thompson, of Alcoa, has recently completed a 10-session leadership seminar at Cumberland College, Williamsburg, Ky., as part of a four-year leadership project. The purpose of the seminar is to learn how leadership is effectively exercised for the enhancement of personal skills.
April Young, of Maryville, has won a Chancellor"s Scholarship from Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y. Chancellor's Scholarships are awarded to first-year and transfer students and recognize outstanding academic achievement. Young is enrolled in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and received the S.I. Newhouse Scholarship.
Hatcher earns degree
Blount County Circuit Court Clerk Tom Hatcher recently earned his associate's degree in criminal justice.
Hatcher graduated from Roane State Community College in August. The former law enforcement officer attended night classes for two and a half years.
"Personally, it's very satisfying at my age being able to go and earn a degree I started many years ago," he said.
Hatcher said he wanted to finish his degree so as to better himself and better serve the citizens he works for as circuit court clerk.
Hatcher and his wife Donna have a grown son, Dustin Hatcher.
Cox named Homecoming Queen
Katie Cox of Maryville was crowned Austin Peay State University's Homecoming Queen during half-time of the football game against Davidson on Saturday.
A senior majoring in interdisciplinary studies, Cox is the daughter of Kim and Betsy Cox of Maryville. In addition to being a member of Alpha Sigma Sorority, which sponsored her candidacy, she also serves as a senator in the Student Government Association and a tutor in the university's Tutoring and Learning Lab. She is a member of Kappa Delta Phi Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society.
She was escorted by her father.
The Homecoming Queen and King were chosen from the Homecoming Court after undergoing an interview and evaluation of their accomplishments. APSU students voted online for their favorites.
