Dear Editor:
The Blount County Animal Shelter in Maryville is one of the worst shelters I have ever visited, and I have been in many in the state of Washington, Indiana and New Hampshire; some of them brand new because people cared enough to keep their community free of stray and vicious animals for their own safety.
The city of Maryville needs to step up and address this problem now and come up with solutions. I can't believe that individuals can't show compassion for our poor dogs and cats that are being needlessly euthanized every week. Bringing a new pet into your home makes it a part of your family and you are responsible for its welfare. Getting it licensed is part of that responsibility.
Surely paying a license fee for every pet owned isn't too much of a problem when they think nothing of spending huge sums on big houses, new cars, computers, cell phone, just to mention a few. Let's make sue through that any monies gained from licensing goes to the proper place which would be to provide better shelter and management for our animals.
Sincerely,
Martha F. Dalhaus
