AAUW seeks nominations for Crystal Award

American Association of University Women, Maryville Branch is now seeking nominations for its annual Crystal Award, Crystal Award. The celebration will take place March 31 at the Blount County Public Library with a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Award Program from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The 2008 Award is the third given by AAUW Maryville. This year’s theme will be “Who Inspired You?” The 2004 recipient was then-Heritage High School Principal, Vandy Kemp. The 2005 recipient was Claudia Brady, director of Haven House.

The AAUW Crystal Award recognizes a woman or man living or working in Blount County whose life or work has created opportunities for the women or girls of Blount County to achieve their greatest potential. The purpose of the award is to increase public awareness of the women and men who are currently helping Blount Co. women and girls to grow.

Community groups and individuals are being invited to nominate a woman or man who meets the criteria, including being a person who inspires others to strive to meet their potential. The nominee must be over age 18; live or work in Blount County; have contributed over time or in a significant way to the education, physical or spiritual well-being of women and girls, or have improved social, economic or political conditions for women and girls; be a person who inspires others.

The 2008 Crystal Award Nomination Form are available on the Maryville Branch Web site at www.discoveret.org/aauwmvil. Return date will be Jan. 28, with judging by three outside judges to be completed by Feb. 28.

Also, those who have been inspired by men or women no longer living or who do not meet the criteria for the award are being invited to honor that person publicly as Crystal Award sponsors in the program. For example, “Autumn Hall honors her mother, Geraldine Berger, for years of love and support.” The contribution requested is $25 per name. Contributions should be made to Women’s Equity Foundation, the 501(c) (3) fiscal agent for AAUW. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent of the law.
