Alcoa forms stormwater utility; fees start April 1

The Alcoa City Commission passed an ordinance on second reading Tuesday creating a stormwater utility and setting fees for property owners in the city. The stormwater fees will go into effect April 1.

Property owners will see a $3 fee per month for residential units and $4 per equivalent residential unit (ERU) per month for commercial units. One ERU is equivalent to 2,696 square feet of impervious surface, an area where water does not permeate the ground.

In other business, the commission:

Recognized Lisa White's achievement of becoming a Certified Professional Secretary

Authorized a 60-day extension of the opening date deadline for retail package liquor store Green Meadow Wine & Spirits LLC;

Authorized approval of an amendment to the curb-side recycling contract with Waste Connections of Tennessee;

Awarded a bid for Class III/IV slope repairs and drainage improvements to Blount Excavating;

Awarded a bid to supply and install fiber-optic cable for the Service Center to Tel Tec Inc.;

Approved on second reading, an ordinance vacating, abandoning and closing two improved public rights of way between Lincoln Road and Glascock Street;

Approved on second reading, an ordinance vacating, abandoning and closing the remaining portion of public right of way known as Summit Avenue and a portion of public right of way known as Ridge Street;

Approved on first reading, an ordinance vacating, abandoning and closing an unimproved public right of way known as Whippoorwill Street and a portion of unimproved public right of way known as Cunningham Street;

Reappointed Eddie Tramel to the city of Alcoa Beer Board for a 3-year term;

Reappointed Kathy Thompson to the Alcoa Development and Housing Authority for a 5-year term;

Reappointed William F. Proffitt to the Alcoa Regional Planning Commission for a 3-year term.
