Blount County firefighters extinguished a blaze in a bedroom at a house on Cherokee Heights Drive just outside the Maryville city limits Tuesday evening.

Fourteen firefighters responded with six trucks at 7:41 p.m. to a house owned by
Gloria Goddard at 410 Cherokee Height Drive.

Blount County Fire Chief Doug McClanahan said that when the first firefighter arrived on the scene at 7:454 p.m., he saw heavy smoke, a small blaze and a man take a short leap out of a front window of the residence.

McClanahan said the man had been inside trying to extinguish the fire with a water hose, and was not injured when he jumped out of the window. He said there were no injuries as a result of the fire, but Rural/Metro Ambulance Service responded to the scene.

The fire was contained to the bedroom area and appeared to have started in the area of the closet, McClanahan said. He said the rest of the house had some smoke damage.

Firefighters had the fire under control at 8:45 p.m. and left the scene at 9:48 p.m.

McClanahan said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.
