Georgia edges UT to clinch series ... and more

ATHENS, Ga. — Gordon Beckham’s two-run single in the fifth inning lifted the Georgia baseball team to a series-clinching, 3-2 victory over Tennessee on Saturday at Foley Field.

Sophomore Jeff Lockwood hit a solo home run in support of another quality start by redshirt freshman pitcher Bryan Morgado, but Georgia (12-7, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) extended its winning streak to six games and handed the Volunteers (13-7, 3-2) their first loss of the season in a game decided by one run.

Morgado (3-2) was tagged with his second hard-luck loss of the season, allowing just three runs on four hits in 62⁄3 innings with four walks and 10 strikeouts. Tennessee freshman left fielder P.J. Polk gave the Vols a chance in the top of the ninth, delivering a one-out triple against Georgia closer Joshua Fields, a second-round pick in last June’s MLB draft. But Fields retired the next two hitters to secure his fifth save of the season.

Tennessee sophomore left-hander Nick Hernandez (0-1, 4.95 ERA) will start for Tennessee in today’s 2 p.m. series finale. Georgia will counter with junior left-hander Nathan Moreau (1-0, 2.01 ERA).

Lady Vols win series at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Freshman second baseman Chandra Mogan drove in two runs, leading the eighth-ranked Tennessee softball team to a 4-2 win against Arkansas on Saturday at Lady’Back Yard in Fayetteville, Ark., and its second consecutive Southeastern Conference weekend series victory.

The Lady Vols (28-5, 6-4 SEC), who also won two of three games last weekend against Kentucky, had rebounded from a loss to the Lady Razorbacks (22-13, 2-9) in the series opener with an 11-2 win in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader, piling up a season-high 16 hits and getting back-to-back home runs from seniors Tonya Callahan and Shannon Doepking.

In the series finale, Mogan was 1-for-4 at the plate and picked up her RBIs on a single in the third inning and a fielder’s choice during the sixth. Junior left fielder Danielle Pieroni went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Callahan, Doepking, sophomore center fielder Erinn Webb and junior designated player Lillian Hammond also had hits for Tennessee, which will return to action with a home doubleheader against Lipscomb at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Senior Megan Rhodes (13-2) earned the win in relief of starter Ashton Ward, allowing no runs on three hits in 31⁄3 innings with three strikeouts. Ward struck out eight and gave up two runs on three hits in 3 2⁄3 innings, also earning her second save of the season after re-entering the contest in the seventh inning with Arkansas runners on first and second with one out.

MHS splits last two games in Disney Tournament

The Maryville High School baseball team wrapped up a dominating, 6-1 run through the Disney Tournament in Orlando, Fla., with a split of its final two tournament games on Friday. The Rebels started the day with an 11-4 win over New Brunswick (N.J.) before suffering a 10-7 loss to Tigard (Ore.) in the nightcap.

Maryville (7-2) came from behind to take the lead in the top of the fifth against New Brunswick, which stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth against Rebels reliever Ryan Dalton. Reid Walker finished 2-for-3, and Wes Spears added a double and three RBIs.

Dalton earned the win on the mound after starter Mason Trenda gave up three runs in three innings. Caleb West picked up the save.

The Rebels had to use four pitchers against Tigard in their only loss of the tournament. Starter Drew Tinker allowed three runs and lasted only 21⁄3 innings. Reliever Mark Strong took the loss, giving up six runs — all unearned — in 11⁄3 innings.

Broughton Greene had a solo home run, Derek Headrick went 3-for-3, Jonny Weigand was 2-for-3 and Spears added an RBI triple for Maryville, which will return to action with a District 4-AAA home game Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Lenoir City.
