The CAREacter athletes of the week are Alcoa's Justin Marsh, Heritage's Tyler Edmonds, Maryville's Shawn Morgan, William Blount's Dalton Wheeler and Maryville College's Gabe Evans. The CAREacter Star Athlete Program is based on a five-point Star System that includes the basic traits of a true champion, whether on or off the field. Those traits are attitude, character, grades, community service and performance. Every week coaches from schools across the country select one student from each specific sport as their school's "Star Athlete of the Week" based on the five-point system and criteria.Lady Hammers take tourney title
The U-12 Lady Hammers completed a successful weekend at the Greenville Round Robin Soccer Tournament by going undefeated over the four-game span. The victory string contained wins over Holston Valley Football Club (HVFC), 4-3; Falcons 2-1; New River United Soccer Association (NRUSA), 1-0; and the Pink Panthers, 4-0. Scoring goals for the Lady Hammers were Masey Fox (5), Caitlin Reilly (3), Hope Wilson (1), Delaney Whitt and Alex Tampas. Molli Miller was the winning keeper in all four games and only allowed three goals during the tournament.Little earns GSAC honor
Lindsy Little, a junior middle-hitter from Friendsville has been named the Great South Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for action ending October 12. Little led Maryville to GSAC wins over Piedmont and Spelman. She had 20 kills, a .410 hitting percentage and 16 digs in the pair of matches. She posted a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs when MC defeated Piedmont to gain sole possession of first place within the conference.Maryville, WB volley results
The District 4-AAA Volleyball Tournament is already under way at South-Doyle High School, but late results from the regular season include Maryville's 25-9, 25-14 win over Lenoir City on Monday night, as well as William Blount's loss to CAK, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20. For Maryville, Morgan Hall had six sets and six aces, while Allie Porter-Garrett had five kills. For William Blount on Senior Night, Megan Wilson had nine points and 13 digs, Nicole Woodby had seven points, four kills and eight digs, and Casey Gaby had seven digs and 10 assists.Maryville Middle boys to state
The Maryville Middle School cross country team recently competed Oct. 7 at Victor Ashe Park in the Regional State Meet Qualifyer. The entire boys team qualified based on their third-place finish. Jason MacNair paced the boys in second place and Kip Garman was 16th. Individual qualifiers on the girls side were Courtney McKelvey in 12th place, Kathrynn Pepperman in 17th, and Alex Sodemann in 50th place. The state meet will be Oct. 18 at Victor Ashe Park. The Lady Mountaineers celebrated Senior Night with flowers from their coach and went on to defeat Rutledge, 2-1, in the last home match of the regular season. Sophmore Ashley Fred scored both goals, the first assisted by sophomore Kristina Matas and the second off a penalty kick from senior Anna VandenHurk, who with senior Ciera Rinck, was honored before the game. Heritage next travels to Cosby for the final game of the season, at 6 p.m., and will open in the District 4-AAA Tournament on Saturday at Bearden, 9 a.m.
