Article published Nov 30, 2008 West subdues Mountaineers, 67-57
By Kelly Franklin Daily Times Correspondent
Strong work at the point and in the paint for the West Rebels prevented Blount County teams from sweeping all six games of the second day of action at the Heritage Thanksgiving Classic Basketball Tournament.
The Rebels from Knoxville broke open a close game in the early fourth quarter to subdue the host Mountaineers in the day's nightcap by a 67-57 count, evening records for both teams at 2-2.
The Lady Mountaineers (4-0) took down the Lady Rebels behind the first double-double for freshman Miranda Maples, and Maryville and William Blount boys and girls all ended the day victoriously.
West was led by point guard Devin Jackson, who ended with six assists, several of them of the eye-opening and jaw-dropping variety, to go along with his 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Benefiting from his bullets into the paint were post players Philip Stanford and Caleb Barrett, who finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
The Mountaineers kept pace early on and trailed by only three (49-46) entering the final stanza, thanks largely to their outside shooting game. Adam Murr drained four of the eight Heritage treys and totalled 14 points, tying him for team-high honors with Lucas Woodruff. Charlie Hardwick finished with 13.Lady Mountaineers 67, West 52
Maples, a six-foot post, grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with 15 points to accomplish her first double-double in only the fourth game of her freshman year.
Lauren Burnett burned West for 23 points and three treys, while Katerina Morris added 14 with four launches from downtown.
Morris, coming off the bench, "gave us a big boost," said coach Rick Howard of the junior, adding "She's been pushing pretty hard for a starting spot."
Heritage held a slim 32-29 halftime lead which they extended to 47-41 entering the final frame. Two bombs from Morris and good free-throw shooting down the stretch piled up the final margin, as the Lady Mountaineers finished 18 of 22 from the stripe.

The Lady Rebels got good scoring balance, with Bailie Roberts (15 points), Mariah Lawrence (12) and Carrie Goodson (10) all finishing in double figures.
Seymour was paced by Kacey Cowan (14) and Ashleigh Elliott (10).
Maryville led throughout, pushing out 15-9 after one quarter and using a 20-point third quarter while limiting the Lady Eagles to nine to put the game away early.Lady Govs 55, Hardin Valley 41
William Blount (3-1) rode the explosive performance of Tatum Burstorm to extend the opening campaign woes of the Lady Hawks.
Burstorm netted six long-rangers on the way to racking up her 27 point total. She and teammates overcame a 12-10 first period Hardin Valley lead with a 24-8 scoring bulge in the second quarter to account for more than the final margin of victory.

The Rebels jumped out 20-11 after the first eight minutes and extended their lead to 46-28 at the break.

The Governors rode the high scoring of Micah Ballard, 25 points and one three-pointer, to extend their early season record to 3-0.
Dominic Ratliff was impressive in the losing effort, as the junior poured in 21 for the first-year Hawks.
Ty McBrayer chipped in 11 for William Blount (3-0).
