Friendsville to begin new Bible study May 5
Friendsville United Methodist Church will begin a four-week study on "Angels and Demons," in response to the new movie by Ron Howard and Dan Brown. The study will examine the Biblical accounts of angels and demons, why angels and demons matter today and how angels and demons make people more devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.
The series will begin at 7 p.m. May 5 and continue on the next three Tuesdays. All are welcome.The church is located at 204 E. College Ave. in Friendsville. For more information, call 995-9150.Alcoa Elem. to register pre-K students
Alcoa Elementary pre-kindergarten registration and screening for the 2009-2010 school year will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 16, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 21 and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 22. Children must be 4 on or before Sept. 30 of this year and also be an Alcoa city resident.
Required documents include proof of Alcoa city residency. Social Security card, birth certificate, updated Tennessee shot record and physical. Parents should bring their child with them for screening.Car show at Fairview benefits preschool
Fairview United Methodist Church will host the Learning Tree Preschool Open Car Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 9 in the church parking lot. Awards will be given out for Best of Show, Pastor's Choice, Best Paint, Best Ford, etc.
Registration is $15 the day of the show. Spectators are admitted free. All proceeds will go to the Learning Tree Preschool at the church, located at 2508 Old Niles Ferry Road, Maryville.Free cancer screening offered Monday
Free skin cancer screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Southeastern Dermatology Consultants, located at 1924 Pinnacle Pointe Way, Suite 300, Knoxville. Appointments are required. Call 474-8800.
The screenings are part of a national campaign to encourage early detection and teach prevention of skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in this country. About 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year.Benefit set for Julia Baugh
Women of Grace Ministry is sponsoring a benefit for Julia Bell (kindred) Baugh, a native of Alcoa, to help with finances for dialysis due to sickle cell anemia. The event, "Dancing for Jesus," will be held at 6 p.m. today at Rest Haven Missionary Baptist Church, 224 E. Watt St., Alcoa.
