ABWA scholarship banquet, meeting set for June 23

The Smoky Mountain Chapter of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) will hold its annual scholarship banquet to recognize the 2009 ABWA scholarship recipients at 6 p.m. June 23 in the Community Room at TNBank, at 1311 West Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville. The guest speaker will be Dr. Richard "Dick" Daugherty, a well-known retired veterinarian and immediate past president of the Cattlemen Association.

ChristyFest, a celebration of "Christy" the TV series, movies and classic novel by Catherine Marshall, will be held June 17-21. Events on June 17 and 19-21 will be held in Townsend, and on June 18, the group will take a trip to the original mission site for a special day-long celebration. The Knoxville Museum of Art, 1050 World's Fair Park, Knoxville, presents "Art from the Ashes" through June 28, an exhibition which includes a selection of objects donated by concerned artists and other individuals from across the country who want to help the families affected by last December's coal ash spill in Kingston. Organizers hope to raise money for the victims by featuring a variety of works ranging from original paintings and sculptures to photographic reproductions, prints and other items, with all items to be auctioned at 3 p.m. June 28. Proceeds will go to United Mountain Defense (www.unitedmountaindefense.org). KMA is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. SKIT is now registering for its Summer Broadway triple threat classes. This two-week intensive program will provide special theatre training for ages 5-18 in singing, dancing, acting-developing, confidence building and presentation skills, including creativity and knowledge of the theatre. Members will work on several scenes from famous Broadway musicals. The camp concludes with a showcase theatre performance. Kamp Broadway will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 20-23 and July 27-30 at the Pellissippi State Blount County Campus, 1010 Middlesettlements Road. The performance will take place on at 1 p.m. July 30 with a reception immediately following. Classes are limited and will fill quickly. Tuition is $125 per week.
