Women's Club News for June 28, 2009

THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION: Met May 26 at the TNBank. President Brenda Harrison asked all to stand for the ABWA Invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance. She then introduced the head table: Ashlee Walker, vice president; Gladys Waters, treasurer; Myra Hood, secretary; and Martha Daughtery, program chair. The guest speaker was Chris Sneed, University of Tennessee Extension Service. He spoke about the services offered by Extension -- ranging from family economics, breast cancer education, financial debt programs, health programs and exercise programs for arthritis, and food preservation classes.

A motion was made to approve the minutes of the April 28 meeting as included in the newsletter. The motion was seconded and carried. A motion was also made and seconded to accept the treasurer's report as written in the newsletter.

There were 11 members present (Brenda Harrison, Gladys Waters, Myra Hood, Shirley Wright, Melba Bruce, Nancy Barbee, Ashlee Walker, Margaret Ann Hill, Martha Daugherty, Millie Stoutt and Kathy Meng) in addition to the speaker.

The Nominating Committee consisting of Kathy Meng, Millie Stoutt and Lynda Mittan presented the slate of officers for 2009-2010: Millie Stoutt (dual role of president and secretary), Ashlee Walker (vice president) and Gladys Waters (treasurer). A motion was made and seconded to accept this slate of officers. The motion carried. The installation of officers will be held during the June meeting.

Committees

Membership: Harrison mentioned that due to Lynda Mittan's workload, she will be unable to continue her membership with the Smoky Mountain Chapter and may join a Knoxville chapter.

Hospitality: Karen Zoriowill provide the meal for the club's scholarship event: Parmesan chicken. The meal will be $12, and there is a service charge of $25 for her to set up and clean up after. A motion was made and seconded to approve the cost. The motion carried.

Scrapbooking: Daugherty provided pictures of this year's forum.

Education: Brief summaries of the applicants were provided in the newsletter, and members were asked to choose five. Each recipient will receive a $500 scholarship, and those chose were: Josalynn Henry, Jelica Fuller, Jacob Holley, Angela Giere and Morgan Sharpe. Morgan Sharpe will be sponsored by the Smoky Mountain Chapter for next year's $1,500 Stephen Bufton Memorial Grant from National Headquarters. A motion was made and seconded to provide flowers in bud vases for each scholarship recipient at a cost of $5 each. The motion carried.

Program: Dick Daugherty will be the guest speaker for the June meeting and scholarship event.

Newsletter: The president from National Headquarters will be visiting the Sevier Chapter in July.

The date for the picnic was changed from July 25 to July 24 at 6:30 p.m. Members are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Pork chops and chicken will be provided by Dick Daugherty.

Millie Stoutt won the 50/50, and Gladys Waters won the door prize. Margaret Ann Hill was given the Woman of the Year plaque.

The May meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m. after the ABWA Benediction was given in unison by those members present and Brenda Harrison.

THE EXECUTIVE BOARD OF THE ABWA SMOKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER: Met June 9 at Harrisons Construction Company in Alcoa. Those present were: Gladys Waters (Treasurer), Shirley Wright (Hospitality), Melba Bruce (Hospitality and Education), Martha Daugherty (Program and Membership) and Millie Stoutt (Publicity and Newsletter).

Bruce suggested that one of the scholarship recipients, Morgan Sharp, be the guest speaker at the August meeting. It was thought that this would be a good idea, so Bruce will contact Morgan to see if she would be available.

Invitations have been mailed to all scholarship recipients, and Bruce reported that it's quite possible that most of them will be able to attend along with their guests with the exception of Morgan. As always, the Chapter will pay for the recipients' meals, but their guests will need to pay for theirs. Meals will be $12 per person.

Kathy Meng and Sandra McNeillie were nominated to serve on the Audit Committee. They will be approved at the June meeting following the banquet.

A suggestion was made that we contact Marcia Walker to present an ABWA type workshop at the September meeting. September also marks the 60th anniversary of ABWA, and ABW Day is observed in September.

A reminder was made that the picnic will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 24 at Dick and Martha Daugherty's pavilion. Dick will fix the meat (chicken and pork chops), and the Chapter members are asked to bring either a side dish or a dessert. Martha's cell phone number is 207-4913, if anyone needs directions to their place.

New officers will be installed at the June meeting immediately following the banquet portion. If Harrison is unable to be present at the June meeting, then Hood could install the new officers.

It was decided that a July Executive Board meeting is not necessary.
