Bredesen: Offer to GM was $20 million

BRISTOL — Gov. Phil Bredesen said the state's cash offer to General Motors to build its new small car at the Spring Hill plant was about $20 million for jobs training, and it obviously was not enough.

The Kingsport-Times News reported that the governor said Tuesday in Bristol that GM executives have told him that as the industry rebounds and they start producing more cars, they are going to need to expand capacity. Bredesen says he is "confident Spring Hill will be on their short list."

GM picked an idled plant near Detroit to assemble small and compact cars, leaving the future of about 2,500 employees at the Spring Hill plant uncertain.The governor says the automaker also would have been eligible for long-term tax breaks in addition to the training money that would have brought the total incentives package to a much higher figure.
