ANSE-A-GALETS, HAITI -- On May 4, following the weekend celebration of Hiwassee College graduation, four Hiwassee students joined Chaplain Eric Doolittle for a real world education in mission. After a day of travel by plane, taxi, sailboat, and 4x4 truck, they arrived in Anse-a-Galets, Haiti.
Anse-a-Galets is the principal town on Isle de La Gonave, off the coast of Port-au-Prince, and is one of the poorest areas of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
The team faced many challenges, but represented our community well in service, in worship, and in bringing hope to this isolated community. The star of the trip was Hiwassee student Gregory Celeste (class of 2009) whose father and mother come from Bwa Brule, a farming community in the mountainous interior of the island.
Gregory's presence and joyful attitude gave hope to all the children that even someone from their little village could go to college in the United States.
The team spent a week distributing clothes, fixing the small church building, working with the children in Bible study, and leading a revival. They also got to see other projects and schools in the community, including World Vision sites supported by our annual 30-Hour Famine, and even squeezed in some beach time.
A well worn, but incredibly enriched team returned to the USA on May 11th, but their work with this community continues. A second delivery of clothing and toys is being shipped, a Web site for sponsoring children to go to school is in the works, and plans for a return trip next January through the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission are being made.
You can help provide students like Gregory Celeste with the opportunity to be educated at Hiwassee College in preparation for ministry to people around the world.
