A Maryville man says he was injured Friday after several unidentified men threw a brick through the window of a car he was driving and beat him with a baseball bat when he got out of the vehicle.

According to an Alcoa Police Department report, the man — who is not being identified due to the nature of the attack — was driving with a Maryville woman to pick up a male friend from a residence on Chandler Station Road. The man and woman went to pick up the friend at about 1 a.m. Friday “because (the friend) had consumed too much alcohol” and couldn’t drive himself.

The report did not give the ages of the man or woman.

When the man and woman arrived to pick up the second man, the report indicates that several unidentified males followed him from the residence and “appeared to be angry with (the friend).” The man, woman and the friend then got into the woman’s vehicle and drove away from the residence.

According to the report, while the three were driving on Topside Road toward a Pilot gas station, a gray Acura pulled alongside them. At that time, the woman reported she “noticed that an unknown white male subject was holding a brick in a threatening manner as if he intended to throw the brick at (the woman’s) vehicle.”

The car the three were driving in stopped running, reportedly, because it ran out of gas. At that point the report indicates that the Acura pulled around the driver’s side and one of the unidentified individuals exited the second vehicle.

That man reportedly threw the brick through the driver’s side window, striking the forehead of the Maryville man who was driving. The man said he exited the woman’s vehicle and started running toward the gas station “as an attempt to draw the assailants away from (the woman).” At that point, the report states, several other individuals exited the Acura and tackled the Maryville man. One of them, the man told police, was carrying “what appeared to be a piece of a baseball bat”, which he used to hit the Maryville man several times. The man’s finger was apparently broken during the altercation.

The unidentified individuals then reportedly got back in the Acura and drove away, and the man and woman were able to go to the gas station to call 911. According to the report, the friend stayed in the car during the alleged assault and walked to the gas station after it was over. He reportedly left the scene on foot when he learned police had been called.

The man and the woman told police they did not know any of the alleged assailants.
The report does not indicate that the man was taken to a hospital for medical care for his injuries, and Blount Memorial Hospital did not have any record of treating him Friday night.
