Parker a State Farm Wade Trophy finalist
ATLANTA -- Tennessee junior forward Candace Parker was named Wednesday as one of 12 finalist for the State Farm Wade Trophy. She joins Matee Ajavon (Rutgers), Essence Carson (Rutgers), Tina Charles (Connecticut), Sylvia Fowles (LSU), Crystal Langhorne (Maryland),
Erlana Larkins (North Carolina), Angel McCoughtry (Louisville), Renee Montgomery (Connecticut), Courtney Paris (Oklahoma), Kristi Toliver (Maryland) and Candice Wiggins (Stanford) as the finalists.
The candidates were selected by a vote of committee members comprised of leading basketball coaches, journalists and basketball administrators. Members of the committee will select the winner of The State Farm Wade Trophy from the 10-member Division I State Farm Coaches' All-America Team and will be announced at the State Farm Coaches' All-America Team Press Conference and The State Farm Wade Trophy Announcement during the WBCA National Convention on April 5 at 9:45 a.m.
Track Vols third in initial outdoor rankings
The Tennessee men's track and field team opened the outdoor season third with 209 points in the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings released Wednesday. Florida State occupies the top spot with 259.63 points. LSU is second with 247.33 points, with Florida's 195.32 points ranking fourth. Southern Cal rounds out the top five with 188.89 points.
Georgia is the next SEC team, ranking sixth with 181.19 points. The Bulldogs are followed by Auburn in ninth with 169.21 points and Arkansas in 13th with 144.86. The SEC has five schools in the top 10, more than any of the eight conferences represented in the rankings, and the conference's six ranked schools is second only behind the Big 12's seven ranked teams.
Maryville takes down Sevier County, 5-3
The Maryville baseball team traveled to District 4-AAA opponent Sevier County on Wednesday night and came away with a 5-3 victory. Broughton Greene picked up the win after tossing six innings with three runs given up. Caleb West earned the save with a perfect seventh inning for Maryville (9-2, 2-1). At the plate, Caleb Clement was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the first inning. Mark Strong also tallied a two-run double in the third. Chris Jordan and Jonny Weigand contributed two hits, and Reid Walker stole two bases in the seventh inning before adding an insurance run on an error. The Rebels will next play today in the SportsBelle Classic at the University of Tennessee against Karns at 4 p.m.
